Sir.

I have the honour to apply for the very

short extension of leave which I ventured to suggest at the Colonial office yesterday, & respecting which I beg to lay before you the following facts:

I entered Gray's Inn as a student

of law in November 1895, and within the short period of 12 months, after most arduous studies have succeeded in passing all my law examinations

in which I attribute

precision of work so constantly

(my

to the method

drilled into me

very largely

during nearly 12 years of service in Hong Kong), - thus there remains nothing except

the formality of keeping terms to prevent

the mere

my being called to the bar in due course, which profession, if once called, I am convinced would increase my possibilities of usefulness in

the Service.

As present arrangements stand I am due back in Hong Kong on the 21st Jan's next
